The sanctuary on Ngamba Island was opened up in the 90s to host the endangered species of one of the main primates in Uganda, the chimpanzee. Due to illegal trade and to some extend for food, the chimpanzees are hunted and killed. Jane Goodall, took it upon herself to save this specie and through a help and un leveled commitment, the sanctuary was begun and now home to the mostly orphaned chimpanzee.
